Digital Twin of the Font of St John the Baptist, Armitage

The font at the Church of St John the Baptist, Armitage.

The church was rebuilt in the mid-19th century but the font is early 12th century, crafted by a local stonemason from grey sandstone. There are figures carved in relief on the font sides standing under arches, two on each of the seven panels and probably represent local men of rank, including churchmen, dignitaries, and a semi-comedic figure, probably intended to be a local Anglo-Saxon man. One woman is represented, wearing a head covering and perhaps with long braided hair.
