Virtual 3D Reconstruction of the old Saint Peter’s Basilica, Vatican
The project was part of the training course
Blender for the virtual 3D reconstruction of heritage from Kore Formacion.
The St Peter’s Basilica was built by the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great in the 4th century. It stood on the same site in Vatican City as the current basilica, which replaced it in the 16th and 17th centuries.
The Basilica: The large building in the image is a Romanesque-style basilica. It was built over the burial site of Saint Peter, and it served as a major pilgrimage site for over a thousand years before being demolished to make way for the modern church.
The Circus of Nero: To the left of the basilica, you can see a large circular structure and an obelisk. The basilica was built on the grounds of the ancient Circus of Nero, where St. Peter is believed to have been martyred. The obelisk, which was originally a Roman monument from Egypt, stood in the center of the circus.
The Obelisk: This is the same obelisk that stands in the center of the modern St. Peter’s Square today. It was moved to its current position in 1586 by Pope Sixtus V as part of the construction of the new basilica and square.
